Nuture or nature and what about stereotypes

I have this issue going on in my head with some people. I wonder on if compassion and empathy is more affected by nurture or nature? Would stereotyping also have an effect on this? I have had friends that have had experience that have gave them more knowledge into empathy and then seen others that have the same experience but does it nothing to

Sometimes people who are really stressed and living too much in their own head can't really step outside and see that they're hurting someone because they're hurting so much inside that's all they can think about. That seems to be what I've observed. I think it usually depends on how self-involved someone is.
