liberals control all media

so the other night at work several of my cohorts and i spoke about what will be important for their children's generation to face.  they were talking about how no one votes and that our mother's mothers fought so hard to earn the right to vote.  then they were discussing the fact that there are so many women that don't even bother staying informed ( Read more... )

I know you probably hate him, but John Stossel made an interesting point about voting and get-out-the-vote campaigns.

Basically, he said encouraging people who aren't really informed or passionate about voting will only weaken a democracy, because those people are likely to make bad decisions with their votes or be easily swayed by advertising and sound bites.

Sometimes, when people tell me why they voted for a particular candidate or measure, I'm seriously freaked out.

i agree with john stossel on that one. the people i work with completely fit that demographic.

i thought it was so odd that they thought their children have nothing important to face (in comparison to suffrage).

i'd rather these people just fall into a black hole--or just not vote.

p.s.--when are you moving back to chandler??

I come across people like that a lot, and I basically just do what you did - bite my tongue. And then I remind myself that people like that are the minority right now in this country, and that change often has to happen in spite of people like that - and will.

it sucks that we can't change the minds of people just by telling them that what they believe is shit. then again, that would be scary if we were that impressionable/easily changed.

the war approval is at an all-time low...but people don't know how to get the pendulum to really sway (including myself--i have no idea how to even alert my coworkers).

it's a delicate line to walk--being authentic to one's views and yet not shaking a person that is so obviously sleep-walking their way through all political thought to wake them up.

work is definitely not the right climate to vent, but it was disheartening nonetheless.

p.s.--i have a degree in psych too. (but i went back to get a nursing degree, as i'd like to be a nurse practitioner at some point in the future--i like the bio-medical aspect of psychology a lot). i mention this as i have read that you have a similar background in psych.

where did you go to school?

"well, all of that is arguable. if the environmentalists would let us drill in north america, there would be less need for oil from the middle east. that new refineries would really alleviate that hole problem."

i really like that their solution to our environmental problems is to get more oil. isn't that sort of the antithesis?

people in this country are so willfully ignorant it scares me. i just don't understand how you can not want to know what is going on in the world around you or even the country that you live in, and just take everything the tv tells you at face value, as an absolute truth. but i suppose all of those in the religious right are already so used to living with blind faith, why not extend that to their political beliefs as well.

it's scary, sad and hard to not be consumed by the anger that this realization causes. i try to stay alert to my political surroundings and try not to give in to feelings of utter disgust when i realize so many others (including the christian right, as you mentioned) are so willfully detached.

i only wish we could make things better. if not for us, for the one's being born into the mess in which we dwell.

beth, i just wanted to tell you that i wish you could think of yourself as i think of you. you are so smart, so witty, so inspiring. i'm sure that sounds strange coming from me, someone that you have had little contact with in ages, but i just wanted to let you know that you are on my mind.
