As Jack Would Say: Deja View!

Jul 09, 2007 20:11

So I've been flirting around with a new fandom the last few weeks, having finally caught up with seven seasons of canon (what is up with me joining fandoms during the seventh season?!).  Having finally dove into some communities and waded into fanfic, I'm mostly surprised by how the same it all is.  I mean, hear me out.  The TV show has a large ( Read more... )

Hee :)
See, my last fandom was Band of Brothers where the entire cast was male and we had to create wives/mothers/sisters/girlfriends and there was never any bashing of the females and it was relatively sane (and mostly gen and very mild slash and not really crazy OTPers (I don't know what it's like now)) and so shipwars and everything else? Confuse me a lot.

I guess I was in the one weird fandom.

Enjoy the new shiny but don't leave the 'gate behind!

Doesn't it seem terribly sad that women bashing was only avoided by having no canon women at all?! That is messed up right there. (And I don't watch SPN, but the fact that people are flipping out because they are daring to add main female characters...the mind just boggles.)

The new shiny is no way strong enough to lure me away from my One Twu Luv. Just picture it. I'm Sam. CSI is Pete, but Stargate is Jack. :P

Omg. I think I need some serious help. hehe.

Only, I think it was more the nature of the canon and fandom rather than the lack of female characters.

It was an unusual canon - a miniseries that told the dramatized version of the experiences of real soldiers - so all the characters were essentially real people (names and all - we could read some of their biographies) so we played really tight lines to stay in the fictional universe and avoid RPF.

Which meant that while their was slash, it was one of the most gen-dominated fandoms I've seen and most the slash would be nearly gen by gate-fandom standards. We also, very much did not vilify (liked) the one female character who shows up briefly and created more female characters to be involved - I think this was one case where canon women might not have been vilified, but I think it was a unique fandom experience.

I'm Sam. CSI is Pete, but Stargate is Jack.

Ha! So who's Kerry? :)

I'm not really replying to your post (except that I thoroughly enjoyed Band of Brothers) and am more commenting on your username... I absolutely adore it. I'm probably one of the few people my age who would recognize it... just awesome. Made my day!

I <3 you. Like, so, so much. I am with you on the Sam-Me/CSI-Pete/Jack-Stargate lurve triangle...so, so with you. I had this revelation a while ago, where I just suddenly sat up and went, "OMG, my fandoms are ONE! And I'm in love with the same OTP!"

Sara/Grissom (GSR!) is one of my favorite pairings ever! I'm so, so thrilled. And really very amused at re-posting fics in different fandoms. I first started watching CSI way back when it was first aired...mostly. And at first I was a Catherine/Grissom shipper--they had the history, and the friendship--but Sara/Grissom won me over in very short order.

The flirting glances! The horrible timing! Significant looks across briefing tables--wait...am I getting the fandoms mixed up again?--anyway...

*glee*

(PS--I wrote a couple of fics that really aren't very good (they were written when I first got into fanfic again) and they're at my website if you want to brave them.)

Yay! Someone who understands! *beams* I am so a GSR girl, but I just LOVE Catherine. Why is everyone so busy hating Sara or Catherine? Can't we all just get along? (I think CSI fandom might need a giant injection of OT3. mmmmmm....)

I will have to check out your fics! (And trust me, read klee_wyck37's stuff. It's fabulous.) I'm working on a little 'Committed' Post-ep myself, trying to wrap my mind around how The Hookup might have happened, but I feel a little worried about characterizations for these new (to me) characters. Maybe I will give you puppy dog eyes to read it over for me when I finish it. :)

Have you heard about all the casting angst for next season? *whimper*

I've been avoiding casting angst. I'm...not looking forward to knowing. But I suppose I ought to suck it up. Okay...so I'm not seeing anything definite. Do you know? Is it a publicity thing? Do they want us to sweat all summer?

I'd be thrilled to look over your CSI stuff. Maybe it'll inspire me to write some more CSI, too. Committed is one of my absolute favorite episodes ever. (It's ridiculous how well I know episode titles if they're OTP eps.) I really love that moment when he's looking in...through a...window...and...can't...get......to.......her........

ah, crap! Screw this--I'm with you on the name substitution thing.

Do you know lasrevinu on ffn? Seriously worth checking out if not. She's the only CSI writer I've got on my list, and it's because she writes angst so good.

I love Catherine! I'm not sure if I'm ready to OT3 her into GSR, but...I'm willing to keep an open mind.

I really, really, really hope that they are just pulling our chains for suspense. I even promise to forgive them such retarded tactics if they just pay her her damn money!

I remember when I first started watching (I have this thing about watching every ep in order) I desperately sort of wanted a beginner's guide to CSI Fandom or something. I just wanted to know which were the shippy eps! (Now I know. Playing with Fire, Butterflied, Committed, Way to Go, and ALL of season seven *cheer*) I just...LOVED season seven.

I'll check out your stuff and that other author when I get a chance. (I also have a wierd thing about not reading fic when I am in the middle of finishing one of my own. Sometimes I like, pick up people's tones/nuances/etc from their fic and that can be a bother when I'm in the middle of something. IF that makes sense. Lol)

Oh, and you asked for it. Fic is on it's way to you, if I can...you know, figure out an email address for you.

I need a GSR icon STAT!

ha! i can see the parallels between sara and sam, but i'm a little hazy on grissom=jack. i rather like warrick on that show and thought they were going with him and catherine but i'm so out of the loop on that show, i have no idea who's with who.

i'm been getting sucked back into HP again. i stopped reading it for a year because all the fics were angsty to the max and after awhile it started to bring me down. but it's hooked me again, alas, there's always room for sam/jack in my fic reading. :)

Oh, yeah. Jack and Grissom have little in common other than being in love with a younger woman at work that they shouldn't be. (That and being grumpy snarky-snarks. :) Season 7 of CSI was pretty damn awesome, if you ask me. Probably my favorite season. Some eps are just downright hilarious.

Yeah, HP. Man, I love the books to pieces, but I've read very few fics. I like Shiny Silver Grl's Sleeping with Hermione (which is not as porny as the title suggests.) and Shezzly's Aftermath (great Harry after the death of Vol, with hilarious Fred and George bits.) They are both on ffnet.

Hmmm...don't have an hp icon!

I prefer to think of it as Character Archetypes. That way it sounds all literary and official, and not just weird and obsessive. Jack = Grissom = Wolverine = Han = Chris from Magnificent 7 = Odysseus. Literary history is on your side. *g*

I read a crossover once where two of my favourite characters from two different fandoms met, and was highly amused and enlightened when they bonded over a barbeque. Apparently the type I gravitate towards is the type who'd be grillmaster.

Haha. Whatever floats your boat. I was more amused by the way fandom falls into camps and reacts to situations the same way. "I hates u, u threat to my OTP. Die, die, stab, stab."

I can't quite see Jack and Grissom hanging out together. Griss qoutes some poetry and Jack goes "hunh?" :P

But then Jack listens to opera too. Not my cup of tea but poetry's good.
