Ever wonder why writers are like that? Is it a formulaic thing? Do they not have healthy relationships and thus don't know how to make life interesting for a couple that would have one?
Although I suppose we watch tv for a little drama. Outside of glowering at my husband for not folding the laundry, my life doesn't get very exciting.
I wonder if it is fear of the Moonlighting effect (which is total urban legend), if they honestly think RST is the death of a show, or if they just have deplorable imaginations. It must have something to do with the notion that resolution = I love yous and babies and marriage, when that really rarely is. Especially with people doing the jobs Peter and Olivia are doing. Whatever.
Huh. I actually find UST far more interesting, and in a way, Fringe threw us a bone and kind of gave us RST, even if it was just from Peter's perspective (and seeing his happiness makes the heartbreak even more heartbreaking). I'm all for angst. I think angst is real and angst is genuine. Sure, Olivia could have come back, Peter could have not told her and lived with the guilt, and they could be together now. Or Olivia could have come back, Peter could have told her, and Olivia could have overlooked it. I don't find either of those scenarios plausible. Either way, one would have been holding back. The fact that Peter was honest with her despite knowing it would probably change how she felt about him, way more rewarding and awesome than either of the mentioned situations. Can you imagine if he lied

Honestly, it's not that Peter told her or that Olivia reacted that way that bothers me. That was the only plausible way it could have gone down, and yes, it's wonderfully angsty and heart-breaky. My beef is that Peter would be fooled by fake Olivia in the first place. The fact that the second they swapped Olivias, I called this particular plot path. (What feels more like a cheap way to earn themselves more seasons to drag out the UST rather than a genuinely interesting plot line.) It makes me like Peter less. There are other ways to draw out UST without character assassination. Just my take.
(And I am still not convinced that RST has to equal death to a TV show. I just think TV is still stuck to a few equations and are scared to death to try anything else. But maybe that is just me.)
On the contrary, this hasn't made me hate Peter at all. Yeah, it's kind of insane to think he wouldn't have noticed, but I also look at it from his perspective: he was raped. Over and over again. And he liked it. And perhaps that's a blunt and unpopular overview, but there you have it.
I think what it comes down to was, she was Olivia. Not his Olivia, but Olivia. You can say he was thinking with his dick (which I think is completely overruled every time he looked at her and totally melted - how in love was he?), you can call him a complete fool, but I think he's plenty going to make up for it now. The fact that he came clean with her, to me, makes up for everything else. He's ashamed, guilty, and he spent two entire months thinking that he was sharing something wonderful with the woman he loved. Was I screaming at him the whole time to wake up? Yeah. But, poor PeterI don't think RST = death of a show. I just think that if the writing isn't done properly, RST = the death of a ship. Hell, my oldest TV show, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman.

It's not bad, really. Just. I wish they had made a few different decisions. Time to go back and re-read that awesome Peter jumping through all the realities to find his Olivia fic again. :D
