Flu thoughts, battles and the author at play

 Here's this morning's meditation:

Meditation 182

I’ve never been a gardener
so all this talk
of vines, fruition,
destruction, pruning, fire
and the unceasing flow of sap

passes me by
like an east wind,
the flight-filled clouds
or the migration path
of distant, unknowable birds.

Keeping on religious matters, church today was rather strange. We now have a three ( Read more... )

Media frenzy over flu pabrown July 26 2009, 19:09:06 UTC
I have serious concerns about the way the media blew this whole 'pandemic' out of proportion to reality. Yes, a few people died. Look up the statistics -- something like 32,000 people die EVERY YEAR from flu like diseases. It's always been a yearly disease that kills. This one was no worse than any other year.

My major concern though is what is the media going to do if a real pandemic strikes? Are they going to goad us into full blown, quarantine the cities, close the airports, build isolation camps for the sick? The religious reaction is particularly scary. Doesn't anyone remember how Jesus treated the 'untouchables' of his day? The lepers who were driven out by the mobs -- He took them in and touched them and treated them with dignity. Maybe the churches of today should go back and actually read their Bibles and learn something about how you deal with sick people.

I was intrigued to read that about your church - I suppose I'm surprised more of them haven't thought of it already, though I'm VERY glad if they haven't. There's no mention of it at mine. My neighbour has had swine flu, so has a boy at Son#2's school, but it's passed like any other flu. I really do think this is being treated like some kind of plague rather than just a particularly strong new kind of virus. I don't know what the matter is with us, with all the other hideous things going on in the world that really deserve more attention and prayer.
