Thoughts on Tauriel and imminent viewing of the Desolation of Smaug

I haven’t seen The Desolation of Smaug yet, but am very likely to do so in the next couple of days, before my housemate Paul heads east to see his folks for Christmas. I am, however, starting to see a lot of reaction coming across my various social network channels, so I wanted to get a few things on the record.

... Yup. ;) And that's before I reread the book like I meant to do /last/ time a movie came out!

I totally endorse a reread of The Hobbit on general principles. There are several lovely new editions that've come out recently, even!

Heh, when I'm typing on my phone I often have trouble getting capitals to work right. Stupid tiny phone keyboard. ;)

I have no problems whatsoever with Tauriel. She's an elf, there are elves in both the book and the film, elves fit.

Something that did bug the crap out of all of us was the two second shot of certain pets in Laketown. The entire cinema had a WTF? moment, judging by the mutterings all around. It had no place in the plot, it reeked of Earth and not Middle Earth, and it threw every one of us right out of the film. Jackson and Walsh may love their pets, but that doesn't mean they have to stick them in a film of The Hobbit. Total Tolkien-unrelated self-indulgence, grrr.

Huh. I don't know if that would have bugged me if I hadn't known they hadn't put their own pets in there; this is the first I've heard of it. I'll have to see if I notice the shot you mean. We're going to see it tomorrow night!
