I am also bothered by the fact he keeps making mistakes. I mean, when you learn something offends people, don't you stop doing it?

Of course, if you don't care about offending people, then you certainly don't stop doing it.

Yes, exactly, that's the thing. He makes what sound like sincere apologies and then he turns around and says completely bullshit things. I mean, if he really did believe taking down the damn shirts was the right thing to do at the time, why did he then decide to get up on a stage and say it was a mistake? How could he have NOT realized that the Internet would fall on his head as a result?
