Labour of Love, by Stephen Hatfield
(Chorus)
Take me somewhere (carry me somewhere)
Take me somewhere (carry me somewhere)
Take me somewhere (carry me somewhere)
Carry me on...

Carry me to somewhere, wherever
Carry me to somewhere, wherever
Carry me to somewhere, wherever
Carry me on,
To where there are people like me...

They brought me to the doctor,
She said it's the clearest case I've ever seen,
This kid needs a ransom,
She needs a genie,
She needs a ship sailing where
She was always meant to be

Chorus

They brought me next to the altar,
I know how you feel, said the voice behind the screen
This world needs a ransom,
We need a genie,
We need a ship sailing where
We were always meant to be

Chorus

We're standing here in our order,
The chords in our voice hoist the sails into the breeze,
We'll give you our heart,
Give you our breathing,
Give you the ship that could sail
Abelard to Eloise

And you know I'll be looking for someone,
And I'll be looking for someone,
And I'll be
Looking out for you there,
Somewhere there are people like me,
Somewhere there are people like me,
Somewhere there are people like me...

(This isn't a children's choir, sadly, though the song is often sung by children. This is the women's section of my choir. During a rehearsal. Not exactly sterling sound quality, sorry.)

Hope For Resolution, Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory

Of the Father's love begotten,
Ere the worlds began to be,
He is Alpha and Omega,
He the Source, the Ending He,
Of the things that are, that have been,
And that future years shall see
Evermore and evermore.
...
Oh, that birth forever blessed
When the Virgin, full of grace,
By the Holy Ghost conceiving,
Bare the Savior of our race,
And the Babe, the world's Redeemer,
First revealed His sacred face
Evermore and evermore.
...
O ye heights of heaven, adore Him;
Angel hosts, His praises sing;
Powers, dominions, bow before Him
And extol our God and King.
Let no tongue on earth be silent,
Every voice in concert ring
Evermore and evermore.

Hope For Resolution is a song dedicated to Nelson Mandela and Frederik Willem de Klerk, two South African politicians who were instrumental in bringing about the end of apartheid. It combines two songs: "Of the Father's Love Begotten," an English translation of an 11th Century Gregorian chant called Divinum Mysterium, and "Thula Sizwe," a Zulu song of hope from the time of apartheid.

Of the Father's Love Begotten is by Aurelius C. Prudentius, translated by John. M. Neale and Henry W. Baker in the 1800s. You can read more about Thula Sizwe (including learning Ben and Alec's parts) at http://singafrica.londongt.org/index.php?page=thulaSizwe

I must admit that the Christmas concert scene was written with some wistfulness on my part because my own choir was supposed to do a concert on December 16, at which we were supposed to sing Balulalow, Praise His Holy Name, and the Hallelujah Chorus. My concert got cancelled because Mother Nature decided to grace us with about 16 inches of snow that day. Hopefully Dublin didn't get the same pleasure.

Balulalow, arrangement by Mark Sirett

Ye Olde Scots TonguePlain Jane English
O my deir hert, young Jesus sweit,Oh my dear heart, young Jesus sweet,
Prepare thy creddil in my spreit,Prepare thy cradle in my spirit
And I sall rock thee in my hert,And I shall rock thee in my heart

...
But I sall praise thee evermore,But I shall praise thee evermore,
With sangis sweit unto thy gloir,With songs sweet unto thy glory,
The knees of my heart sall I bow,The knees of my heart shall I bow,
And sing that richt Balulalow! And sing that right (proper, or fitting) Balulalow (lullaby)

Al Shlosa D'varim, text Pirkei Avot (Mishna), music by Allan E. Naplan

Hebrew Lyrics: Al shlosa d'varim ha-olam kayam: al ha-emet, v'al ha-din, v'al ha-shalom.
English Translation: The world is established upon three things: truth, law, and peace.

This is a recording of a girls' choir singing with mine. Al shlosa is not a 'seasonal' song, that I know of, but it is sometimes included in end-of-year concerts, to give them a multicultural feel.

Also, I don't know why but when I imagine Draco's children's choir singing it, I take out the spoken bit at the beginning ;)

Fields of Athenry, arranged by Mark Sirett
By a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young girl calling:
"Michael, they are taking you away,
For you stole Trevelyn's corn,
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay."

Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

By a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young man calling:
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free.
Against the famine and the crown,
I rebelled, they ran me down.
Now you must raise our child in dignity."

Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

By a lonely harbour wall,
She watched the last star falling
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
Sure she'll wait and hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

Finnegan's Wake
(traditional Irish ballad)

Tim Finnegan lived in Watlin Street,
Oh a gentleman Irish, mighty odd,
He had a beautiful brogue both rich and sweet,
An' to rise in the world he carried a hod1
Now Tim had a bit of a tipplin' way,
With a love for the liquor he was born
And to help him on his way each day,
He'd a drop of the craythur every morn2

Chorus
Whack fol the dah3 now dance to yer partner,
Round the flure4 yer trotters5 shake
Wasn't it the truth I told you?
Lots of fun at Finnegan's Wake!

One mornin' Tim felt rather full,
His head felt heavy which made him shake
He fell from a ladder and he broke his skull
They carried him home his corpse to wake
They wrapped him up in a nice clean sheet
An' they laid him out upon the bed
With a gallon of whisky at his feet,
And a barrel of porter at his head

Chorus

His friends assembled at the wake,
And Mrs Finnegan called for lunch
First they brought in tea and cake
Then pipes, tabaccy and brandy punch
Biddy O'Brien began to cry,
"Such a nice clean corpse, did you ever see,
Ah Tim mavourneen6, why did you die?"
"Ah hould your gob," says Maggie McGee

Chorus

Shelagh Maloney took up the job,
"Ah Biddy," says she, "you're wrong, I'm sure"
Then Biddy hit her a belt in the gob,
And left her sprawlin' on the floor
Then the war did soon engage
It was woman to woman, and man to man
Shillelagh7 law was all the rage,
And a row and a ruction soon began

Chorus

Frankie O'Connor ducked his head,
When a novena of whisky flew at him.
It missed, and landed on the bed,
And the whisky scattered over Tim.
But God he revives, see how he rises,
Timothy risin' in the bed,
Sayin' "Whirl your whisky 'round like blazes,
T'underin' Jaysus, d'ye think I'm dead?"

Chorus

Glossary of Irish/obscure terms
  1. hod: a trough carried over the shoulder for transporting loads, as of bricks or mortar.
  2. craythur: whisky
  3. whack fol the dah: hit the fellow until he says "Dah!"
  4. flure: floor?
  5. trotters: feet, possibly pig's feet
  6. mavourneen: darling
  7. shillelagh: a cudgel, traditionally of blackthorn or oak
And no, I have absolutely no idea what he says at the end of the song. It sounds to me like "How would you royal one Gameboy," or possibly "There's a bathroom on the right."

...and I made up the whak fol the dah thing. It's just meaningless words ;)

Johnny Be Fair
(traditional Irish ballad, although some sources ascribe it to Buffy Ste. Marie)

Well Johnny be fair and Johnny be kind and wants me fer to wed.
And I would marry Johnny but me father up and said:
"I'm sorry to tell you daughter what your mother never knew.
But Johnny is a son of mine and so he's kin to you."

Then Jimmy be fair and Jimmy be kind and wants me fer to wed.
And I would marry Jimmy but me father up and said:
"I'm sorry to tell you daughter what your mother never knew.
But Jimmy too is a son of mine, and so he's kin to you."

Then Danny be fair and Danny be kind and wants me fer to wed.
And I would marry Danny but me father up and said:
"I'm sorry to tell you daughter what your mother never knew.
But Danny too is a son of mine, and so he's kin to you."

Oh never was there a girl as sad or sorry as I was.
The boys in town are all me kin, and me father is the cause.
If I should thus continue, I might die a single miss
I think I'll go to Mother and complain to her of this.

"Well daughter haven't I taught you to forgive and to forget?
And if your father sowed his oats, still you need not fret.
Your father may be the cause of all the boys in town but still....
He's not the one who sired you, so marry who you will!"

The Irish Ballad, by Tom Lehrer
It's of a maid I'll sing a song,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
It's of a maid I'll sing a song
She did not have her family long.
Not only did she do them wrong,
She did ev'ryone of them in, them in,
She did ev'ryone of them in.

One day while in a fit of pique,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
One day while in a fit of pique,
She drowned her father in the creek.
The water tasted bad for a week,
And we had to make do with gin, with gin,
We had to make do with gin.

Her mother she could never stand,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
Her mother she could never stand,
And so a cyanide soup she planned.
Her mother died with a spoon in her hand,
And her face in a hideous grin, a grin,
Her face in a hideous grin.

She weighed her brother down with stones,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
She weighed her brother down with stones,
And sent him off to Davy Jones.
All they ever found were bones,
And occasional pieces of skin, of skin,
Occasional pieces of skin.

She set her sister's hair on fire,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
She set her sister's hair on fire,
And as the flames rose high'r,
She danced around the funeral pyre,
Playin' her violin, -olin,
Playin' her violin.

Skippedy-ah, skippedy diddely diddely-ah

One day while she had nothing to do,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
One day while she had nothing to do,
She cut her baby brother in two,
And served him up as Irish stew,
And invited the neighbours in, -bours in,
Invited the neighbours in.

And when at last the police came by,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
And when at last the police came by,
Her little pranks she did not deny,
To do so she would have to lie,
And lying, she knew, was a sin, a sin,
Lying, she knew, was a sin.

My tragic tale, I'll not prolong,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
My tragic tale I'll not prolong,
And if you didn't enjoy my song,
You've yourselves to blame if it's been too long,
You should never have let it begin, begin,
You should never have let it begin.

Will Ye No Come Back Again, by Lady Carolina Nairne
As with most Jacobite songs, the tune was written and popular long after the rebellion was over.

Bonnie Charlie's gone away
Safely o'er the friendly main
Many a heart will break in twain
Should he ne'er come back again.

Chorus
Will ye no' come back again?
Will ye no' come back again?
Better loved ye canna be
Will ye no' come back again?

Ye trusted in your Hielan' men
They trusted yon, dear Charlie
They kent1 your hiding in the glen
Death and exile braving.

Chorus

English bribes were a' in vain
Tho' puir2, and puirer, we maurn3 be
Siller4 canna buy the heart
That aye beats warm for thine and thee.

Chorus

We watch'd thee in the gloamin'5 hour,
We watch'd thee in the mornin' grey,
Tho' thirty thousand pounds they gie,
Oh, there is none that would betray!

Chorus

Sweet the lavrock's6 note and lang,
Lilting wildly up the glen,
But aye to me he sings a sang,
Will ye no come back again?

They cut off our hands and put nails in our eyes.

We drink and we die and continue to drink.

Loch Lomond
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes1,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond
Where me and me true love were ever wont to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.

Chorus
O ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye.
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.

'Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep sides o' Ben Lomond.
Where deep in purple hue, the hieland hills we view,
And the moon comin' out in the gloamin'.

Chorus

The wee birdies sing and the wild flowers spring,
And in sunshine the waters lie sleeping:
But the broken heart will ken1 nae second spring again,
And the world knows not how we are grievin'.

Chorus

Glossary of Scottish/obscure terms
  1. brae: hillside
  2. ken: know

Traditional Scottish song. It's generally believed that the author was a captured Scottish soldier, awaiting death in prison. The "low road" is a reference to the Celtic belief that if someone died away from his homeland then the fairies would dig a tunnel for his soul to return home.

By the way, though in the story Draco loathes this version of the song, I think it's quite lovely. I hated it when we first got it - may have made gagging sounds the first dozen or so times we practiced it - but eventually it grew on me ;)

Streets of London, by Ralph McTell

Have you seen the old man
Outside the closed-down market
Kicking at the papers,
In his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
His hands held loosely by his side
Yesterday's papers telling
Yesterday's news

Chorus
How can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand,
I'll lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair
And her clothes all in rags?
She's got no time for talkin',
She just keeps right on walkin'
Carrying her home
In two carrier bags.

Chorus

In the all night cafe
At a quarter past eleven,
Same old man
Sits there all alone
Looking at the world
Over the rim of his tea-cup,
Each tea lasts an hour
Then he wanders home alone

Chorus

Have you seen the old man
Outside the Seaman's Mission
His memory's fading
Like the ribbons that he wears?
In this wintry city,
The wind cries little pity
One more forgotten hero
In a world that doesn't care

Chorus

Jerusalem, by William Blake (music by Charles Hubert Hastings Parry)
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountain green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.
