Seven Recs and a Request

So, before anything else, here's a note from one of my kids:

Hi, my name is J. I am doing a project about the History of History and I have some questions for you:
  1. What comes to mind when I ask you what are the different kinds of history?
  2. What are some huge historical events that changed how we think of history? Or that changed what we think of ( Read more... )

Thank you thank you thank you! This was great. My little guy very much appreciates :) :)

And hey, being a history major can be useful; I used to be one myself :) :) :)

I can give an answer to the first of the questions above, as I've just been working on that:

History started out as repeated tradition in the form of 'collective memory' and only later becomes a social science. The crucial difference between history and collective memory is that the former is a 'written chronological record of significant events affecting a nation or institution' and the latter 'a set of recollections, repetitions, and recapitulations that are socially, morally, or politically useful for a group or community'. (I am quoting in part from Favorini, Attilio. "History, Collective Memory, and Aeschylus' the Persians." Theatre Journal 55 March (2003): 99-111., but that is probably not relevant for your kid - stress that the difference is here: history = recollection, a narrative, formed by an author; memory [especially collective] = repetition, tradition; memory came first).

And thanks for the recs!

As a scientist, I'd say history started with the Big Bang. Pretty much changed everything is this corner of the universe anyway.
