We say "taking the piss". All the time. The alternatives the reviewer mentioned would be something I'd say if my granny or a teacher was in the room. :)

'you're taking the piss' is most definitely Britglish. I hear it almost every day.

'you're joking' can be used for US/UK and 'you're kidding me' is from your side of the pond :P my dad uses it more than I do.
