Reading the Independent

Well, two things struck me this morning, that made my skepticism about the current Plot To Blow Me Up grow exponentially.

Now, I know for a fact that there have, in the past, been people willing and able to commit mass murder, here in London. So I was willing to give the police the benefit of the doubt, even after Charles de Menendez, even after Forrest Gate.

But rumors are circulating that the tip-off came from the interrogation of a suspect arrested in Pakistan. Now, I have also heard rumors that the respect for human rights in Pakistan is less than what it is in England. Was the suspect in question interrogated with the aid of means we would consider not appropriate? Wanna take a bet? And would you, or me, in such circumstances, confess horrible terror plots and denounce all of our friends? Wanna take another bet?

Other rumors are circulating that among the evidence seized there were suicide tapes. I would like to see them, please, and as soon as possible. Because right now, I am willing to give the suspects the benefit of the doubt.

Also, it appears that one of the men arrested, the student of biology, was a Terry Pratchett fan. Now I know that one should not judge, and that just because you're one of us doesn't mean you can't be a jerk... but I have a hard time reconciling reading The Truth and then preparing to blow up planes in mid-flight.
