LH and I went to see Revenge of the Sith tonight. I've grown up with that series (as many of you have). I had this wave of nostalgia all through the movie. sigh ( Read more... )

Shoot me if you want, and I certainly could be wrong, but I'm on Bill Weasley's side here. I watched Star wars Episode 4 A New Hope five times in 1977, each with a different date (one was my dad). I remember. My memory could be flawed, but I remember.

And I remember in 1977 talking in depth with my friends about how this was episode four of Lucas's nine episode vision. And these particular friends are experts on Sci-fi. They are now employed by the Star Trek franchise and I watch their names roll by on the credits. And it was these friends who told me all the background on Lucas and how this Star Wars was not really the first, but the fourth of nine episodes.

OK, I'm still befuddled. Then why, for the longest time was what is now Episode IV refered to as just "Star Wars?" Why didn't we refer to it as "A New Hope" from the beginning?

I'm scanning Star Wars.com this morning. It even refers to the first three movies as "Star Wars", "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi."

My inner Ravenclaw is refusing to admit defeat yet. Thanks for your memories though. :)

I think It was just Star Wars and A New Hope was a sub title. I don't think It became official until they knew the sequels would be produced. But all nine episodes were written from the beginning and the movie was always the fourth episode according to my understanding. Fern oughta know.

Sorry dear...it has always been Episode IV. Lucas realized when writing the screenplay he was in the middle of the story...and went with it due to his influence from the sci-fi serials as he grew up. The backstory more or less was there from the begining...although it was changed some as the story evolved with the sequels...the most notable being Luke and Leia being brother and sister. *grins*

That and Luke being originally a girl. Hee.

Yeah, I agree with the others. IV it always has been. Lucas had a chunk of the story outlined, but when he looked for movie material, he knew that the best part of the story is Episode IV, so that was where he started. Plus the whole space opera thing--one always feels plunked into the middle of a story in space opera, and that was the genre that he was working with. :)

But I don't know that he had 9 episodes outlined at the time when IV came out... I remember the rumors of the third trilogy coming out when Timothy Zahn's books first came out, but I think those are just rumors. (but very, very old rumors)

Sigh - rats. No gloating for me. And thanks for answering my LH's main question, Pirate Ginny, which was why on earth start in the middle of the saga. Deep Sigh.

And, I do know that plans to film the third trilogy has been nixed. It was announced after the release of Jedi but Lucas has changed his mind. Evidently ready for other things. :)

Good thing it's my LH's birthday this evening and I'm making him cake. I think now it'll read "You Win" instead of "Happy Birthday." Sigh - ok - back to Harry Potter where I know the canon and trivia backwards and forwards.

lol! I know that my husband would find that much more birthday-like than "happy birthday." ;)

And happy birthday to your LH!
