Books and stuff

Since my mom died I've slowed down considerably with my reading. I want to read, I think it'll take my mind off things that are bothering me - but I'm finding it hard to concentrate, which makes me even crazier and actually more depressed. And I am depressed right now, I know it, I can feel it, and there are a few reasons for it that are perfectly ( Read more... )

Depression's not exactly great at recognising other people's plights, and fair enough, why should it be? Somebody else's tragedy doesn't make your own problems disappear. Please do cut yourself plenty of slack.

Wot she said...

Gotta tell ya, hon, when Tom died, it took me about 3 months to get back enough concentration to read... I picked up some bad TV habits around then. For awhile I was truly worried that I wouldn't be able to do my job, which involves reading medical charts, and would have to trade my computer for a mop & bucket...!

It's taken me a bit of time to get back in the reading habit... I'm having a wonderful time with the Kindle I got; Sporangia's making warding-off-evil gestures just about now, LOL!, but between the fact I can get something to read just about anywhere, and can lug half a library with me, I think it's a great little gadget.. One of the things I love is that you can download all kinds of stuff not readily available in a print version.

Umm... if y'all do really get into the biking thing, please do me a personal favor and don't pedal up 44i to Hogtown -- people up here drive crazy..!

Thus, the appropriate bobble head I bought. ;) But, you're right, it's so much easier to sit there and veg in front of the tube because it takes a lot less concentration. It's okay if your mind wanders when you're just sitting there watching something. It's aggravating when you think you've just read some pages in a book, and you realize you have to go back and try again because you don't recall a thing you just supposedly read. It's like being in a blackout situation at times ( ... )

Yup... there are some things that can't successfully be ported to a Kindle... anything that requires images doesn't work well, and some of my jewelry books just don't translate at all well; if you're juggling a setting and a stone and very possibly a jeweler's hammer, you have no extremities left over for working a Kindle, LOL!!
