This one looked rather long in the tooth... or, as we say in some parts of the states, rode hard and put away wet. Both horsey references, now that I think about it. Hmmm.
Maybe she's 18, and the tanning booth made her look 30. I noticed some skin damage around her eyes, that bleaching pattern some women get.
Anyway, I don't want to humiliate her further because doubtless this was her dream and it ws one day out of her life, and who am I to mock that?
Well, who I am is, someone who doesn't believe in
A. Weddings
B. Expensive Weddings
C. Pre-teen trollop attire
D. Any article of dress that limits a woman's ability to walk, much less defend herself.
But still, I am trying to be nice about this, and stick to being horrified without turning horrible.
PS: How did she offload her lagers in that thing? Just crouching at roadside, like the hoop-skirted aristocrat in The Piano?

I think it was her dream, until she realised the reality. Her face looked so tired by the end.

I still get chills when I think about what a nightmare that contraption must have been to wear.

BUT - a tinker's dam, as I understand it, is a tiny bit of clay, used to hold the molten metal in place until it solidifies, in the process of repairing a bucket or pan. I have never seen the process, but have been assured that this is true. After the process, the clay is just discarded. I was trying to describe what I had been told (and didn't truly comprehend) about this to someone, and went to the dictionary for assistance. I got "referring to the low speech of tinkers". I have not forgotten, or forgiven. I disposed of the offending dictionary.

I need to go looking for this. I don't have time today, but I'll keep it in my mental queue and report back later.
Thanks!

You addressed this over in your own LJ here.
He repeats the worthless-person's-curse theory, and doesn't mention the clay business at all. He's a nice guy, though, and responds to comments if you care to leave one.
I would, but I'm packing! First trip home in four years starts three days from now. :)

As I prepared to answer this gentleman, I looked through all the references again. The one in Wikipedia had been deleted, and the one in Wiktionary had been modified to the point of deletion. It used http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=20000114 as a reference. I decided that it was a complete enough reference that I didn't complete my answer. I decided to let it go. I can't believe it myself, but I did.
Thank you.
Enjoy your trip!
