I went to a high school willingly for my last two years with a uniform. I wore a skirt occasionally, but I was one of only two in my grade who regularly wore pants.
I thought I looked much better in it. It was great in winter, and I still look more killer in a pantsuit than a jacket and skirt.
I love dressed because of the ease of the one-piece, but I'm actually not as much of a fan of skirts. If I wear two pieces, I prefer pants in most cases.
How young are some of the people on your list? I didn't experience what you describe in that way, but I know enough people my mom's age or just a bit older than me that did. There was also a gender hierarchy that was about that clear in one of my first jobs, right down to making coffee, which I refused to do.
My mom had to worry about sexism, but nothing happens in a vacuum. She had to also deal with parents telling her she could not discipline their children because she was black but it was ok for the other teachers to do it.
Trousers (or pants to you!) were similarly verboten here in the state education system when I was at school. Thankfully this is no longer the case
