Hamster Eats Car

It's old news, but still funny. Houdini the Hamster ate his mother's car back in 1997.

I'm guessing he did this for the same reason marmots eat cars in the American Pacific Northwest.

Well, your pacific brethren are notorious for chewing their way through rubber goods in car engines.

I'm told this is for the salt, but how much salt can there be? Surely they don't find road salt tasty?

I'm also told it's for the antifreeze. Antifreeze tastes sweet, and all mammals (little kids, dogs, and marmots) like it very much. But it is inevitably fatal without immediate medical intervention, so this doesn't seem right either, does it?

The first URL I give you below suggests that some rubber has soy in it, and that rabbits and marmots are going for the soy. Never heard that before.
