Drowning is one of my favourites too. It's certainly one of the funniest.
I love the graphic and typographic elements in his compositions. PG is a fine artist - a plasticien as the french put it - and I love his painterly use of light and cadrage. Then there's all the little sub-plots and mind-games which run through his narratives. Then there's all the visual puns and allegories. All that rotting fruit and insect life in Drowning, for instance. I read somewhere that the numerical elements are a huge red-herring. He was accused of playing with cabalistic gematria, to which he laughed and dismissed the idea. He is among my most favourite of cinéastes.
