this tweet happened. I spent the day flailing in advance, because that place was within 20 minutes of my office and I could get there right after work ( Read more... )

we DO build up expectations, Ani. it's human - and fandom- nature. but then reality happens. besides, had it been a convention or a red carpet event or... perhaps the atmosphere would have been different and there would have been signing of things and photo taking and...
it's not their fault, it's not our fault, it's... what it is.
I guess the best approach to such events is just soak up the moment, don't expect anything and what happens, happens...

and don't worry about the photo quality; that's not important. the important thing is that you were in the room and watched and listened and lived all that. :)

yeah, I think the atmosphere was a large part of it - this was such a low-key event, with only about 40 or so people in attendance, and random passersby on the street occasionally pausing to look through the windows. A part of the Hollywood magic lies in unattainability and having some unbridgeable distance between the stars and the public, which wasn't really achieved with him casually sitting on a chair in the middle of a hockey store ( ... )

yes, I think new media definitely ruined the magic of those close encounters... a zoomed in video will give us youtube viewers better image and sound quality than actually being there.... and I think it also changed the way we experience things (see the book I've sent you. I've read it; it's... terrifying :( )
at the same time, nothing beats the experience of actually being at a concert or red carpet event and feeling the vibe of the crowd. that's something youtube can't replicate. YET.

I think I fell in love with his characters, not him
...maybe that's one of the biggest praises and compliments an actor can get ....
... and I guess that's the main reason fanfic was born.

I thought the book would be terrifying, which is one of the reasons I didn't read it. :|
I've probably seen similar stuff elsewhere, though. :(

"at the same time, nothing beats the experience of actually being at a concert or red carpet event and feeling the vibe of the crowd. that's something youtube can't replicate. YET.yes. though by then it probably wouldn't be youtube, but a different medium. incidentally I was thinking about this a while ago - where in the future, people would find a way to capture the entire experience of, say, meeting a celebrity, in 3D, not just audio and video in a first-person perspective but also touch and smell and taste and everything... and how that would change fandom for better or for worse ( ... )

Hey, I know how you feel!! In 2002, I was given a chance to be in the same airspace as MJF. I saw him ahead of me and I froze...and my opportunity slipped away to meet him. It killed me and haunted me for years.

I was really, really, really lucky, though. Our paths crossed twice 7 years later and THIS time, I seized the moment. Resulting in meeting him twice, for a picture at each encounter and a HUG the second time, within a time span of 5 days. Bucket list item checked!

Be patient. You are in NYC now and he lives there, so your odds go way up compared to most other people. :-) I think you may get another chance.

! you got a hug? awesome!

and yeah, I'm keeping an eye on his twitter account, because this probably won't be the last time he'll announce something like this. :)

I think I know how that might feel. To meet somebody you enthusiastically fan over, stuff goes on normally/ kind of meh, there are the occasional awkward moments, and the all thing ends with something akin to sad trombone.

I'm still happy for you, that you got to see MJF live. :D

I just found out that Misha was in Brooklyn a while ago. I'm going to blame him. :|

is Game of Thrones worth watching? there are random people hyped up about it and my brother says to watch it, but the amount of fandom/SJ wank I've about ite terrifies me.

(I also have issues with the author from that time he ranted about fanfic, but given that I still read Orson Scott Card's books, this isn't a good excuse. /o\ plus I'm guessing that GoT fanfic flourished anyway, slash and all, which makes me oddly happy)

Blame on!

Game of Thrones is definitely one of the series I'm the most excited about. But, yeah, it can get pretty dodgy and violent when it comes to handling certain themes. I can't speak for any wank in the fandom, since I avoid the fandom: mostly, to run away from book spoilers.

It has a few great characters, though. Although, you are not supposed to get too attached to any of them, from what I hear from people who read the books...

misha is responsible for everything. \o/

Would that be more dodgy and violent compared to most other media, or about the same?

I get attached to characters too much. :(
