Illegal Animorphs

Feb 06, 2013 13:41

From Hirac Delest:

"In other news: An amusing article has popped up on The Buzz where a new Mississippi bill has been introduced that forbids human-animal hybrids, such as the Animorphs. The HB 819 is The Protection of the Human Person Act, and would have slapped the Animorphs with a fine should they have ever gone public in our time."

I don't really know, but to be serious for a moment I imagine it would have something to do with the ethics of genetic manipulation. A bit like the issues that surround designer babies, for example.

Oh, designer babies don't actually exist! (...at least, I don't think they do.) But that's generally the term that people use when talking about what would happen if parents are allowed to change their child's genes through things like IVF and whatnot.

Like, at present in a lot of places you're allowed to use the IVF techniques to make sure that your child doesn't have a genetic disease, for example. But there's the arguments over whether you should also be able to choose things like the child's sex, and if you can choose the sex then will people also be choosing how intelligent the child is, or what colour their hair and eyes are, etc etc etc. Designer babies is what some people argue would happen if you do allow anything more than the removal of genetic diseases.

Ngl, I got a good chuckle out of the fact that they actually mention Animorphs in the article- I thought Issam (or whoever posted it to HD) would've added that in.

But like growly, I'm left asking why the hell anyone would want to mix human and "animal" DNA (ignoring the fact that humans are animals, of course). Why? To make humans resistant to certain things? I'm baffled. Also, does this remind anyone else of Eve and Adam, Applegrant's latest book? It's Crayak at work, I tell you!

Hah, I just keep thinking of those sci-fi stories set in futures where everyone has been genetically engineered to the nth degree, and you have people with genes spiced in for awesome hawk eyes and stuff like that... haha, it does a bit!

Why? Research: Splice human version of gene into another animal with a similar gene. See what happens. They already do it with yeast and E coli.

Clearly people in Mississippi haven't actually read Animorphs because they aren't hybrids, they don't reside in half human/half animal form. They just change INTO animals.

So I guess this law outlaws all manner of fantasy animals? Centaurs, Minotaurs, Egyptian gods and anthros? Haha... Ok.

Well, the the full article goes into a bit more detail. Possibly it's the ban of "A nonhuman life form “engineered” with a human brain" that would make the Animorphs count. Buuut really the article is all just an excuse to poke fun at the law XD

Oh God, this reminds me of the Buffa-human. Single most disturbing thing in the
series :(

Sob yeah. Not to mention Ant-Cassie...

Clearly the Buffa-human and Ant-Cassie should be used as prime examples of why people shouldn't be making human-animal hybrids. YOU MIGHT MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THEM
