Series Re Read: Megamorphs #4 Back to Before

What would you do if you had the opportunity to change your life? Not just where you live or who you hang out with but your past, present and future? Sounds like it might be pretty cool, right? Well, that's what Jake thought. He thought it might be easier if the Animorphs had never existed. If they'd never met Elfangor. If they all had the chance ( Read more... )

I always thought Tobias joining the Sharing and Jake resisting it is a much more in-character development than the TV show, which did the opposite.

The "stacked deck" thing was cool although Cassie felt like she was just written to be an anomaly so there was a way to restore the timeline. Not to mention tie into Ellimist Chronicles and #54.

I liked that book, largely because it was interesting to see the characters in this different situation. I mean, the characterizations were accurate throughout, and you got to witness the different behaviours/reactions to these maddening situations ( ... )

I just want to say that I like the Marco and Rachel angle in this one...

Wasn't big on this one. Mostly because I need people turning into tigers and elephants and fighting aliens with death-rays in order to be properly entertained, and this book sadly lacked in this angle.

It was an interesting character piece, just in case you forgot that Tobias used to be a loser, or you completely missed the copious amounts of M/R chemistry in the regular series. And Drode's last little bit at the end made me smile. =3
Cassie suddenly having epic universe-restoring powers kinda rubbed me the wrong way, to be honest. She gets her super powers later, by reliably predicting the behavior of cannibalistic worms. She gets too many super-powers by the end of the books. Nyaaaah.

In the end, I liked it for a quick read, but it wasn't one of my big ones. =/

Yes, it stood out to me how painful Tobias’ life was, including how Rachel might not have protected him. And how bad Marco’s relationship to him (and to Aximili?) initially was…and now daphne_23 has reminded me of Marco’s relationship to David.

I wonder about what others might have said of Elfangor changing the human Animorphs’ personalities, since I do see their response to Tobias’ problems and to Controllers’ problems as very different. Perhaps Elfangor changed them when he demonstrated to both Tobias and the others that he found Tobias-and the whole planet?-worth dying for? I love the idea of neither present nor future personal friendship being a necessary prerequisite for helping…an idea that the Sharing demonstrates in MM#4. I’m also thinking of a part in a story by Anna Jókai that might go something like this (and in itself, the same word might mean both “strength” and “power”):

"’Nothing has happened to me yet…neither death, nor war…please understand!... Aunt Anna, where should I draw the strength, the strength from ( ... )

I liked a lot about this book but in particular Tobias' storyline since it seemed the most realistic of them all. I could see him joining the Sharing and not fitting in.
