Chapters: 00

Chapter One

He felt smooth fingers softly caressing his cheek as warm sunlight fell across his face. Jungsu smiled at the feeling, and buried his head further into the lap his head laid upon. He slowly opened his eyes and saw his mother’s smiling face over his. His mother leaned over and kissed his forehead before sitting Jungsu up.

Jungsu looked at his mother in confusion as she started to walk away from him. He listened to the wind billowing against the leaves of the tree he was under and saw another figure stand next to his mother.

‘Umma…appa…’ Jungsu tried to call out to them but they didn’t hear him and continued to walk away from him. He quickly got up and tried to run to them, but found that his legs wasn’t the fully grown legs of a twenty-four year old, but the legs of a fourteen year old.  Tears slipped out of his eyes as Jungsu tried hopelessly to catch up to his disappearing parents.

After what seemed like an eternity of running, Jungsu collapsed on his knees crying. ‘Don’t leave me…”

‘You’re parents left because you cry too much and now you’re cousins have abandoned you too.’

Jungsu looked around his surroundings and saw that his hand was clutching the doorknob of the shared bedroom that was now empty. All of his cousin’s belongings were gone, leaving only Jungsu’s old, faded blanket on the alone futon. ‘Ryeowook…Sungmin…Donghae…where are you?’

Jungsu froze as he felt a hand grip his shoulder, which was, like the rest of his body, covered in bruises and welts. He looked down at the ground, hoping that it would swallow him up and allow him to leave the cursed place.

He realised that his body was twenty-four again as he was spun around and pushed down the stairs to the foyer. He hissed out in pain as his already battered bones came into contact with each stair. Jungsu weakly lifted his head off the cold floor and saw the figures of his three cousins walk away from him. ‘W-Wait!’

“Jungsu…”

‘Don’t go…’ He reached out his arm in hopes of catching the disappearing figures.

“Jungsu!”

‘Don’t leave me alone again…’ A tear slipped out of his eye.

“Hyung!!”

Jungsu’s eyes snapped open at the voice and at someone roughly shaking him. He saw that it was Donghae who woke him and that tears were running down his cheeks. Donghae sniffled and rubbed his puffy eyes.

“H-Hyung…he…he…” Jungsu pulled Donghae into a hug despite his pained body and tried to comfort the boy.

“Shh, Donghae, calm down and tell me what happened.”

“H-He came and took Ryeowookie and Sungmin-hyung tried to fight him off but now he’s hurt and I didn’t know what to do! I couldn’t do anything!” Donghae sobbed into Jungsu’s arms as Jungsu looked around for the injured boy and saw that Sungmin was slowly walking over to the pair.

Jungsu held out an open arm for Sungmin, who gladly welcomed it. “Sungminnie, are you okay?”

“Yes, he only slapped and pushed me down.” Sungmin said with a shaky voice. Jungsu kissed Sungmin’s head in hopes to calm the boy down. Since Sungmin was the second oldest out of the four boys, Sungmin felt that he needed to protect his dongsaengs when Jungsu couldn’t.

“Okay, you stay here while I go and find Ryeowook.” Jungsu tried to stand up to rescue Ryeowook but found it hard since Donghae was still clinging onto Jungsu’s shirt. “Donghae, I need to go to Ryeowook.” Reluctantly Donghae let go of Jungsu, allowing him to run out of the room to the kitchen, where he heard pots and pans being smashed.

He opened the door completely and saw his grandfather flinging various kitchen appliances at Ryeowook who was only able to dodge some of them. Jungsu winced when he saw his grandfather slap Ryeowook across the face with a pan and moved forward with his blood boiling.

“Jungsu-hyung!!” Ryeowook cried and stretched his arm out to his cousin. His grandfather turned around and saw Jungsu advancing with fire in his eyes and grabbed the nearest object.

Unfortunately he was not fast enough and was met with a fist in his cheek. The grandfather staggered backwards before falling on the cold tiled floor. Seeing that his grandfather was distracted, Jungsu ran forward and hugged Ryeowook before quickly helping him up.

“Ryeowookie, I know you’re hurt but we have to get out of here as fast as we can. Can you walk?” Jungsu helped Ryeowook, with an arm around his waist, towards the door. Ryeowook nodded weakly and limped towards the door, neither of them noticing the rising figure behind them. Jungsu saw both Sungmin and Donghae hiding behind the door and motioned them forward to help Ryeowook.

Once Ryeowook was taken from his arms, Jungsu was able to relax the strain that was placed on his shoulders. The hair on the back of his neck prickled as he felt soft releases of breath against his skin. Jungsu turned around only to feel nothing but a stabbing pain in his side.

“Hyung!!” Jungsu faintly heard the voices of his dongsaengs as he collapsed onto the floor with blood painted upon his fingers. He could vaguely see the outline of Donghae as he ran forward and swung a pan across his grandfather’s head, causing a sickening crack to echo throughout the kitchen.

Sungmin helped Ryeowook lean against one of the kitchen counters before running to Jungsu. Jungsu coughed and tried to regain the breath that was knocked out of him as his vision refocused. He felt the warmth of Sungmin wrap around him as he was lifted off the ground and carried back to their room. He honestly wasn’t surprised that the younger boy could carry him.

The past days had gotten harder on the four as their grandfather had locked the kitchen, restricting them from food, and sometimes locked them inside their room with minimal food for the day. Jungsu didn't want any more pain to come to his dongsaengs since they were still young and fragile to the world so he usually shared out his portion of food amongst the other three. As a result, Jungsu could feel his body become lighter as he became weaker each day that passed with each beating he got.

Now that he received a fatal blow to his body, he couldn’t keep up his courage any longer. He felt the barriers around him crumble, as he could no longer hold the pain inside him anymore. A tear slipped out of him eye and sweat started to bead on his forehead as Sungmin started to take his shirt off to tend to his wound.

Sungmin saw that even though Jungsu got stabbed, the wound itself wasn't as damaging as everyone had thought. He understood that the reason why he was in so much pain was because he had barely any energy in his body to direct the pain elsewhere. Sungmin peeled off the shirt damp with blood and threw it aside before getting the first aid kit.

Jungsu’s heart rate increased as he gasped out for air. “Donghae…Ryeowook…I need you to start packing what we have as compact as possible. We have to leave here as soon as possible. I don’t…” Jungsu winced at Sungmin applying pressure to is wound before continuing. “I don’t know how long we have to run before he comes for us.”

“B-But hyung, I hit him with a pan. We all heard the noise it made.  Maybe he’s dead?” Donghae asked as he weakly complied with Jungsu’s instructions, still shaken with the near-death encounter Jungsu had.

As brave as Jungsu was to his dongsaengs, he was deeply afraid of his grandfather. No matter how aged he was, strength seemed to be on his side. Jungsu knew this from experience since he was the one who received most of the beatings from him. “We can never be too sure. We have to leave the moment Sungmin has finished patching me up.”

Ryeowook looked at him worriedly. “But hyung, shouldn’t you rest? You’re weak and tired and in no state to move around.” Tears started to well in his eyes again.

“No, it’s either we leave or we die. None of you can die, you all have such bright futures ahead of you.”

Sungmin frowned as he started to wrap bandages around Jungsu’s disinfected wound. “You have a bright future as well hyung. We know that you care about us a lot but you need to take care of yourself better. I don’t know what we’ll do without you if you weren’t with us anymore.” Jungsu bent his head down in shame for making his dongsaengs worry about his health.

As Sungmin wrapped bandages around Jungsu’s waist, his hands softly ran over the scars that had been left several years ago. The wax that was poured on him had welded fabric to Jungsu’s back and so when the pair was able to leave their grandfather’s room, Jungsu almost fainted from the pain of removing his shirt. Nine years later and only large ugly scars remained from the incident but it reminded Sungmin ever so strongly of his reliance on the older boy.

Sungmin hugged Jungsu’s back. “Jungsu-hyung, when we leave this place, we will start a new life. A life where we will all be away from this place and we will all be happy again.”

Jungsu nodded weakly and tried to stand up. Once up on his feet, he pulled a new shirt over his head and tried to walk towards the door. A few paces and Jungsu stumbled, causing him to fall head first into the floor. Luckily, Sungmin was there to catch him.

“Hyung, you’re in no condition to walk. Get on my back.” Sungmin bent down for Jungsu to climb onto. Jungsu reluctantly complied, knowing that he had neither the strength nor the will to argue. Seeing that the other two younger boys had packed all their belongings with some first aid supplies, Sungmin motioned them to follow.

Upon reaching the foyer, Donghae ran to the kitchen to quickly swipe some bread for the journey they had ahead of them. He grabbed the bread but froze when seeing the still body of his grandfather lying across the floor. He didn’t know whether or not to be happy or scared, knowing that his grandfather was strong and was possible he could get up to seek his revenge on them all.

Seeing Donghae’s stillness, Ryeowook pulled at his shirt, snapping Donghae from his frozen stare. “S-Sorry. Let’s get out of here.” They both shuffled quickly out of the kitchen to where their hyungs waited for them.

No words were exchanged as the four of them left the silent household and into the cold breeze that bit their bones and skin. Feeling their cheeks go numb from the wind, they pushed forward further in hopes of reaching the main road that was quite a distance from the mansion.

Jungsu wanted to help and care for his dongsaengs but found it harder and harder to fight the sleep that was threatening to take him. His eyes drooped close and Jungsu was able to put his full weight on Sungmin, which wasn’t a big difference. Sungmin smiled as he heard the peaceful breathing of Jungsu, signalling him that he had fallen asleep.

A crack was heard through the distance making Jungsu twitch but stay asleep. Sungmin breathed a sigh of relief before looking ahead, wondering what could’ve made the sound. Ryeowook gasped and leaned against Donghae as they all stopped to observe a large man get out of the truck that had broken down along the side of the road ahead of them.

Nodding at each other, they slowly and stealthily moved forward in hopes of being able to hitch a ride without the man noticing. It appeared that the truck needed it’s water filled and so when they saw the man filling the engine with water, the three of them hoisted Jungsu and got into the open end of the truck, knowing that with a blanket over them, the man wouldn’t see them.

Once the truck was brought back to life and on the move again, Ryeowook pulled the blanket off from them and wrapped it around Jungsu who was laid against the middle of the back of the truck. Leaning back against the boxes around them, they let out the breath they had been holding and stared at the peaceful stars over them with a single thought on their minds.

After ten years of staying at the heartless mansion, the four of them had finally escaped together.
