I've only attended AX in anaheim, but I have scoped out the LA convention center and I have to say the surrounding hotel layout and attractions makes me wish it was in Anaheim still.
I've attended AX since 2003 (sans 2007 due to work), and have been to both sites. And to be honest, I'm really enjoying the LA site a bit more.
Even with the growing attendance, it seemed that LA had some breathing room to walk around in. I remember in Anaheim, due to it's nature of being tall but thin, the floor level was always crowded...inside and out. And it was easy to get lost in Anaheim with the multiple floors and escalators.
Yes, it isn't as nice an area as Anaheim, they have Disneyland to thank for that and are obviously tourist-friendly. Everything is available in Anaheim. But LA has Little Tokyo nearby, and that's certainly a plus for any otaku.
I've never had to book a hotel because I'm within a reasonable driving distance from both, so I can't give an opinion on that matter.
