I was also a bit disappointed that they didn't let Moriarty stay dead.

This is something I'm really disappointed by. I haven't watched the last episode yet, but I've spoiled the ending for myself and just...Why. It takes all the drama out of the second series ending for me if he's not dead. I'm currently hoping it either (a) a copycat pretending to be Moriarty or (b) Moriarty pre-recorded something just to fuck with Sherlock from beyond the grave.

What do you think about what they did with Mary? I mean beyond the "she is awesome", do you think they changed the right things about her? I ask because I thought she would be the character I identify with in this crazy world of spies and detectives and now...she's really not.

Mary...

I don't know Mary well from the books, honestly. In the radio series she's always getting the boys out of trouble, which is kind of fantastic.

I was really pleased and impressed that Mary was cool - and that Mary and Sherlock were cool with each other. I think the way they've done her character now does kind of undermine that, because, yeah, I absolutely loved her in the first two episodes. I don't hate what they've done with her, but you're right, she's no longer the Normal. And neither is John! I have a bit more problem with that, honestly ( ... )

I was really expecting Mary to get Stuffed In A Fridge* by the end of series three. Somewhere in the middle of The Sign Of Three I said "I LIKE her. She's gonna end up dead, isn't she?:/"

Then she shot Sherlock and I thought "Oh. She's not going to get stuffed in a fridge, she's going to be a villain. That's... only a slight improvement."

But, nope. She's just got a Dark Past, but she genuinely loves Watson and he forgives her her deception and her Dark Past they are allowed to stay together. And I was really pleased with that. And kind of impressed.

*I miss inline links so much. Why does no other social media allow this? Or have nested comments threads? And why did everyone abandon LiveJournal for Facebook or, occasionally, Google+ when LiveJournal is vastly superior in these and several other ways?

I mostly abandoned it for tumblr... which has its own problems but is so freakin addictive. But it does allow inline links! (My not-actually-new-years-resolution is to be on livejournal more...)

Yes. I was SO HAPPY they didn't kill Mary. And that they're a good couple to each other.

Hahahaha the Hounds of Baskerville. We were like "didn't this story use to have an extortion plot in it?"

What's neat watching through the Granada Sherlock Holmes is how few of the original stories were actually murders - murders go to Scotland Yard first, Holmes gets the cases no one is really sure are cases. Lots of Innocent Girls who have just inherited great fortunes which are being kept from them by sinister uncles. Neat stuff. And actually going through the process of the solve. I guess they figure we know how it's done by now, so they can gloss over that. But I actually like seeing how it's done.

Yeah, the Watson gun thing has been pointed out to me by other folks as well, saying that it's his plan all along. But... like, that's a really terrible plan. That's a Potter Puppet Pals kind of plan ("Just shoot him!"). And he is genuinely surprised that there are no vaults, even if he did perhaps plan for the murdering folks possibility. They really should have just let Mary kill him.

I'm not convinced the Moriarty isn't dead. My leading theory is that it's going to turn out that he's pulling some pre-planned (probably complex) last shot from beyond the grave stunt.

Of course, I could be wrong. And then I will be annoyed right along with you.

Apparently Moffat has said at some point that Moriarty is going to stay dead, because otherwise the Reichenbach fall is just two men faking each other's deaths, and therefore totally pointless.

Not that anyone should necessarily ever trust what Moffat says, but it's a fair point.

I suppose We Shall See. But Moriarty's body, and whether it was ever recovered or not, is still a fairly important open question....
