Just a note - this eclipse is not total anywhere on earth - it's annular, since the moon is near apogee so not big enough in angular diameter to fully block the sun.

Fair enough, fair enough. And I do actually know the difference :P

I thought the moon was near apogee though, since just last week we were talking about supermoons and such.

The fact that the moon was very near perigee last full moon lines up perfectly with the fact that it will be near apogee at the opposite side of its orbit when it's new during the eclipse.
