So, I discovered fanficrants...

Mar 24, 2013 22:52

...It seems to have been mentioned a few times around my flist recently and piqued my curiosity, so I checked it out.

My goodness, it's like bad reality TV; I can't tear myself away.

But please, please, if any of you ever read my stuff and feel it's rant-worthy, please just tell me ( Read more... )

no real brain to text filter in evidence, stupid fic is stupid, fanfic, maybe it's just me, musings, thoughts, more platforms for me to do stuff

We had a general fanfic rant the other day on my Voyager board -- people listing their favourite (in a manner of speaking) misspellings, grammatical no-nos and clichés. The result (for me) was that I will no longer have one of my characters "quirk a smile" or "release a breath (s)he didn't know (s)he'd been holding". Was that the kind of rant you meant? They can be salutary and educational, without that personal edge ... ;-)

Hmm... no, not quite - I'd agree that those can be really useful, making you aware of cliches and tropes you weren't even aware you were using :) I guess that would come under the category of normal feedback in constructive criticism rather than a rant.

And there are some of those on there too, kind of directed at a fandom (I'm guessing fairly similar to the rant on your Voyager board?) but some are also very non-specifically directed at specific fics; as in - 'Dear Author of irritating fic, character X would not..., yours, ranter.' Which would be the one I'd rather have come to me directly, as it does have that personal edge.

Okay, the rest of the community might not know the fic you're on about, but if it's yours, you probably would. It's just potentially some really valuable feedback that you might never see, and if it wasn't addressed to you, you could do it continuously without being any the wiser, with a reader seething far away on the other end of the internet. :)

I'm just still astounded by the rant about me (seriously, I was the main person who used that tag - the OP could have COMMENTED, and boom, no need for a three paragraph rant). Although, on the other hand, the OP showed themselves to be an ableist arse, so that was something ( ... )

You got ranted about? Oh no! See? This is what I mean! *Hugs you*

I get venting, I really do - and I understand the need for it. Some of the historical stuff too, can be useful. I'm more worried about the specific ones, where, like you said, all that's needed is a comment or a PM.

Seriously, if after someone commented or emailed or whatever, and the issue was still unresolved, people can rant away - but at least they went direct first, otherwise it's just a bit like... internet bitching? Having a problem and then speaking to the world at large before going direct and dealing with it. Yeah.

And oh gosh, please do! Seriously.

I did! And it was so utterly ridiculous - it was a tiny tagging issue, when the person would've known that I'm a semi-regular commenter, and it was seriously only a friend and myself who did it...and mostly me. *rolls-eyes* But the way the person phrased it was....ableist as hell. Which is...one reason I do like fanficrants - they got called out on that. But more than, over the years I've been there, it's taught me to be WAY more aware of things that insult people. Not in Social Justice airy-fairy ways that people complain about it with, but in the solid, deep down point of SJ, which is "don't be an asshole". It's a bit of a "eat our own" community, but I value it for that. And it's opened my mind to things that I've done, or wouldn't have seen an issue with, and made me stop and think and go "hey, no, not cool." Not always fun, but needed.

But, yeah, when it's venting about the tiny things like tagging, I just. Pffft.

Attitudes I can get, because...it's exhausting fighting with people over them. Same with trends. But:

Having a problem and ( ... )

I didn't even know ficrants were a thing?
Eesh. Now I'm terrified. I just try and hang out where peopleare nice... I mean, iI'll rant about TPTBs no problem for example, but that's different!

Also, I owe you an email... Sorry, crazy fortnight lived up to expectations! Back properly soon. I hope x

In the meantime: smooch. Your stuff inspires a complete absence of rant in me. Squee, yes. Rant, no. :)

They are totally a thing that I discovered yesterday. There's a community where people just rant about stuff they don't like in fanfic. It's like the internet complaints department. I was terrified too, I kind of accidentally trawled it looking for anything that could relate to my fics. I don't think there was anything, but even so. Terrifying.

Why would anyone even rant about your beaut works?! They are glorious my dear! I tend to stick with the nice, encouraging side of things too, but even so, if someone's got a problem I wanna know!

*tackleglomps you* Don't worry about it! As always, the disclaimers apply. And your squee make me happy :D x
