stones

I went a little stone crazy at the beach. Mostly because I love stones to begin with, and there were so many lovely, ocean rounded smooth pretty pebbles at the beach where we were. Once I caught on (a few days into the vacation) I went on at least 1 walk a day, collecting stones. It was slow, painful work (not used to crouching down to pick things ( Read more... )

I like the stones better uncropped, but both are lovely. I think uncropped it called less attention to their being just slightly lopsided, and makes it feel more at home and natural.

As for the second piece, wow. I never would think to do the things you do, but they always come out so amazing. I wish I could borrow your brain for one day. :)

thanks. the second one embraces the randomness that comes when in the process of making art. i don't start with a subject, but instead decide on something i want to do, some kind of mark I want to make, and then it unfolds from there.

after I had the "print" marks of the stone prints, I added the "cocoons" around some of them, only because they looked a little bare, and not as round, and it seemed like they wanted to be round.

i added the lines because there were a few little drops of watercolor that had landed here and there, and I used them as starting points from which I drew lines to connect to some of the round shapes.

I filled in the resulting shapes with gray watercolor because it seemed to need a little more weight; something to anchor the piece together.

I don't know of a way to actually lend out my brain, but hopefully a thorough explanation of the process of the last one will do! :)
