Must... go... to... bed...

The Telegraph encounters slash, and gets catty about same.

Dude, they cite Barthes! OMFG, I'm back in university again! *hopes to wake up a la Val Kilmer in Top Secret! to find that it's just a dream, and instead, I'm actually being whipped* (Heh. Yes, well. Anyway. *cough*)

beeblefish! How goes the thesis? *pokes at my academic amigo*

semiotics, meta, slash, cultural theory

Catty, perhaps, but you have to admit that the last two sentences are dead on target:

In short, it's very interesting. A pity it's not more readable.

It seems the media's really picking up on this lately. There are now reporters whose beat is the internet, so presumably they're stumbling over fanfic they wouldn't have noticed when it was largely paper-based. I think you'll see more and more of it, in the near future.

He goes to aff.net and then complains that most of slash is unreadable? Well, duh. I have fic up there myself from my early days but, like ff.net it's got a lot of dire fics. Drives me mad when people swan in, make sweeping assumptions and swan out again.

Seriously. Calls for a rebuttal, methinks... :)

*nods* I wonder if it's worth pointing him to better sources?

Tee hee.. oh man I have to read that.. I'm reviewing a book this week about about two women's slash communitites about X-files and (oh yeah) Due South. Ack! The thesis is thesising, I've gotten involved in the Montreal Poly community and have turned the 30... am gettng ready to be the professor for my first course and ... and what else.. trying to swim out of mountain of debts that accrued from OSAP deciding my second semester starts in March. Yeah.. that's about it... I little crazy right now....

I'm going to have to start calling you Professor! Though I haven't decided whether it's a Gilligan's Island kind of thing, or a Philadelphia Story kind of thing. *grin* Crazy can be good -- you're busy with progress, that's the main thing. :)

You know, joking aside, if I was at Trent right now, I'd be all over the internet fic community. My 4th year thesis was supposed to be on virtual community and cultural production in a lesbian feminist poetry newsgroup, after all... *theory geek*

You know, that would make an excellent MA ... have you thought of going on once the Bun is a bit older, of course.... you could stretch it out and do it part time...

*shrug* I could, but there's not much point if I'd never put it to use (really don't think I'm cut out for teaching). I often think about getting that last Honours-level course, and that might be worth doing by distance ed (Athabasca has some great course options) on a letter of permission. But going further... nah. Even if I had the money or the time, I can't think what I'd do with it, in the end. Nothing I've ever worked at has had very much to do with my degree, as it is! :P

The old thesis is probably unworkable, at this point. The newsgroup's long gone (invaded by trolls, fell apart before USENET became largely useless, and was never rebuilt elsewhere). I have all my research and notes, still, but... yeah. Obsolete (think Apu and his box of punch cards). *snort*
