I have seen the anime series, and being as I don't play MMORPGs, it confused the living hell out of me. I even watched it twice through, and I'm still confused.

There's a lot to be confused about. I don't think this would be remedied much by playing MMOs in general. .hack the games, though, are single player games which are meant to simulate an MMO. There is a real MMO version of .hack planned to be released in the vaguely near future as well (.hack//fragment)
