Holland, Spain, and the myth of "Total Football"

I am sick and tired of people calling this final a clash between two proponents of Total Football.

That's not because Holland aren't playing Total Football. It's because no one is playing Total Football. Not Holland, certainly, but not Spain or Barcelona, either. Total Football hasn't been played since 1978, and arguably, not since 1974. Total ( Read more... )

Oh gosh, I wish I could show you a gif of Ronald de Boer (now an analysis over here) when Total Football was mentioned as a must-have tactic in the final for the Dutch. I think he rolled his eyes, politely. Arrigo Sacchi, on the other hand, acted as if he heard catenaccio and Fabio Cannavaro in one sentence.

(Why yes, my pre-game and post-game studios are a full of giggles :D).
