Cats
Cats can find their way home from anywhere any time they want.
Dogs
Well, my daughter has finished her
science fair experiment, and I want to again thank all you intrepid experimenters who contributed data. The experiment wouldn't have been nearly as successful without you!

I'm not surprised about the cats... I recall a story back in the 80's about a cat in Russia that was exiled I think to that city of exile and made his way back home to Moscow. I wish I knew the details because it was an interesting story.
By the way, while looking for that story I found this you might be interested in. It's about the homing instinct of animals. Nothing about dogs, mostly about cats (from a cat lovers website). But it's sort of interesting nonetheless.
Oh and grats on the essay! Good luck in the nationals!

Part of why I didn't do it with my dogs is that they are usually walked together (which isn't daily since they do have a big yard) and whoever's left at home when one leaves alone on a leash gets really out of sorts.
On a few occasions, someone will the gate open and they'll get out. We have no idea where they've gone but they always come back. It would have been interesting to see how they each performed, especially since one is male and one is female and they behave differently on the leash for regular walks.
