CBS and Memogate - Report Released

One day I will try to read the report released today about memogate, but for now I'll be content with reading summaries being posted by bloggers. One thing I find interesting - the report says that it was "zeal" to get the story out first that led to this story being broadcast. I find that disappointing. Judging from the virtual ink being used on reporting on the report, not just on the blogs but at online papers like The National Review, I think you're right. CNN put a vote box on their front page where you can vote on whether Dan Rather should have been fired (as of this morning, 54% say he should have been canned). A similar vote at MSNBC has 61% of respondents saying they believe that political bias and not just shoddy reporting played a role in the affair. It goes on, and will continue to go on for the next while, I think. The pressure from bloggers on CBS will continue unabated, and the people who run the Tiffany Network can see the numbers: dropping and aging viewership, consistently third place ratings, fallout and distractions from the public embarassment, and rising salaries for blow-dried on-air celebrity news reporters translating into negative returns. I expect a reckoning in a short while (6 months, 3 years, whatever), where we will see a major revamping of news divisions for all the broadcast networks (not likely) ( ... )
