Thanks for sharing that. From this side of the pond, it can be hard to hear the voices of sanity in the US and that can be very depressing. I'm enjoying reading the perspectives you've posted - extremely thought-provoking.

There is more of this than you think over here, but it is not in the mainstream press. The current edition of The New York Review of Books is full of intelligent articles (the most recent edition is particularly good), Salon consistently on top of things, the site "Common Dreams" collects a large number of progressive view points (though they have their share of cranks, too), and the many, many good lefty blogs - Eschaton, Brad DeLong, Talking Points Memo, Hullabaloo, Altercation, DailyKos, Fafblog (which has the added advantage of being the *funniest* political blog, ever), Shrill blog, Juan Cole, Mark Kleiman, The Poor Man, and Matthew Yglesias (aka "Big Media Matt"), to name only the ones I read regularly.

However, it takes a novelist like Doctorow to get to the core of the matter, distilling meaning from the bare facts, and talking universally, not simply in the language of polls and party.
