It wasn't a text adventure, was it? 'Cause there's a not-very-old game called "Glowgrass" with a plot kind of like that.

How about trying the search on www.ask.com to see if that will work better? I tried putting in "old computer game novel disappearing" and got a good long list of what looks like forum postings about old computer games.
