Very interesting question. And thanks for posting the link! For as big a space buff as I am, I never thought to look at the history of the logo. Neat.

acronyms you can pronounce

That could be considered redundant, actually. According to prescriptivist definitions, a non-pronouncable abbreviation might be an "initialism" or just "abbreviation.

If you wanted to challenge me you would have asked for the official NACA logo. National American Committee on Aeronautics, dismantled in the fifties.
