This is very much how I feel - but I'm a little surprised you see it the same way, having grown up in a place with its own fourteenth century legends. Maybe it's just not possible for anyone with a folklorish bent to spend much time in England or in its books without being infected by the Matter of England (I love that phrase).
I recommend How the Heather Looks by Joan Bodger, if you haven't already read it - she and her husband took their young children for a summer in England to visit the locations of all their favorite English books.
Okay, so I'm pretty sure that was Butleigh you stayed in - not by the directions but because of the Rose and Portcullis and the deserted hospital! :) I took some video footage from the bike coming down through the village yesterday, but the quality is crap - I'm still working on a decent mounting.
That has taken me straight back to my visit almost two years ago - and how I wished I could have much more time to properly visit the country I grew up in but left. It had been 26 years since my last visit there and for weeks after my return home to Australia I wanted to get on a plane and go back. I even thought of returning there permanently but financial constraints were too much.
As for the Tor - I've been there twice and both times I went up the side, not the "official" path, and chatted with the sheep. I didn't go again on this trip but I did, finally after flying past it on the way to Cornwall so many times in my childhood, stop in Avebury and walk the circle!
