+ Mort
+ Hogfather
+ Small Gods
+ Guards! Guards!
+ Witches Abroad

I was going to get Wyrd Sisters, which got the most recs by far, but they didn't have it.

I have no idea why a simple trip to the bookstore and the grocery store should be utterly exhausting, but I guess I have a lot of ( Read more... )

Are you just starting Discworld? 'Small Gods' and 'Guards! Guards!' are my favorites of these, but they're all awesome.

I'm going to put in a plea that you not start with Small Gods. I find it uninteresting, preachy, repetitive, and smug; throughout the whole novel Pratchett comes off like a combative, know-it-all teenage atheist who can't shut up about how Religion Is Evil (and I say this as an atheist myself). There are a lot of people who love the book, and maybe you will too. But if you read it first and hate it as much as I did, it might put you off Discworld forever, which would be a shame.

I have to say I didn't find it the most inspiring either, it's one of his weaker ones. Possibly the religious stuff will be of more interest to angevin2 and make up for that, though.

I was indeed! I saw that one at Borders, in fact, but didn't buy it.

I am totally going to get Wyrd Sisters because everyone has been pointing up the Macbeth connections -- probably I will order it online.

I'd start with Mort and Small Gods. Witches Abroad should wait until Wyrd Sisters arrives. I know I said I was going to read it, but I got side-tracked by Le Guin, so it may be a few days or weeks (depending on how much quilting I get done, I audiobook while I quilt, and the baby who will get the quilt was born a few days ago so I'm hustling) before I do. Hogfather is one of his middling ones in my opinion, perfectly nice but not at the top, and should be read after Mort. The mini-series of it was passable. And Small Gods, as mentioned below, you may not like at all, so read that one last. You've got an awful lot of new books for an author you haven't started yet!
