I have never liked Portia so I assume she just made it up so she can get Antonio off her (not to mention her husband's back) and then say ha, ha, fooled you!

Shakespeare thinks.... 'Oh shit, but he's still poor, and the punters won't like a rich bird marrying a poor bloke... I know what! I'll make it so he's suddenly rich again! Can't be arsed to write it all out in a proper scene - he can just get a letter. Yeah, that'll do... whoops, pub time!'
