Lightbourn was played by John McEnery and he played him as a very cold efficient man, dressed all in black like a puritan, looking almost as a "civil servant", with a black bag and a pair of black gloves which he pulled on fastidiously as he approached Edward's cell ( ... )

Thanks for the info. And yeah, it totally does give me a picture -- I can even recall that sense of mass audience horror, having experienced it in other productions...

I must have stewarded about 20 perfs of Edward and couldn't ever watch the murder (apart from a couple of times towards the end of the run!) Everyone (including the company) used to tease me "Have you actually seen that bit, Claire?"
