I remember when I first read this as a kid, I had no idea what f*ing (as it was primly spelled in my edition) was supposed to mean in the poem.

Heh, the old anthology I first read it in (also as a kid, but either old enough or worldly enough to be well-versed in swearing) had "f.ing" (also "s." for "shit"). I recall being surprised that people could swear in poems even if it had been censored.
