and soon lie Richard in an earthy pit!

Feb 05, 2006 22:32

So if you guys ever get the chance to see this indie version of Richard II, released in 2001, directed by John Farrell, starring someone named Matte Ossian in the title role, and a lot of people you've never heard of?

DO NOT WATCH IT. RUN FAR, FAR AWAY. If at all possible BURN THE DVD.

Trust me on this.

There may be a lengthier review later. ( Read more... )

wtf, unspeakable vileness, richard ii, the abomination

Well, unfortunately, you've made it sound like something that would be entertaining for mockage.

It would be, with the right group and a good deal of alcohol. The spurious action sequences alone would offer terrific fodder for mockery... ;)

(One of these days I really do have to organize a Bad Shakespeare Party, or something. That would be fun.)

Oh, man, now why'd you go and do that? Now I HAVE to see it.

(Nothing can be as bad as Derek Jarman's Edward II. ...Right?)

This is MUCH MUCH WORSE than Jarman's Edward II, which wasn't so much bad as extremely weird, and also had the benefit of Tilda Swinton, who was, as always, brilliant.

Also you will be no doubt as outraged as I was that the "This England" speech was entirely excised. I mean...what the fuck?

That is going against all that is natural and holy and IT MAKES ME WANT TO CRY. ;_;

Good grief, what's the point of the play at all without the "This England" speech?

(No, please, don't answer that. I know better, you know that. I meant that rhetorically, from the point of view of the "average" Shakespeare goer, for whom that is about the only thing they remember from the whole play.)

Oh yes, please do a lengthier review, or I worry I'll have to go find it and watch it :)
