in me it seems it will make wise men mad

This afternoon I went to Borders so that I might spend my tax refund check on books and whatnot. Here is what transpired as I crossed through the audiobook aisle, en route to the Medieval and Renaissance Studies section:

OUR HEROINE: Hey, there's Will in the World on CD... Oh, look! Audio Shakespeare! Let's see what they have! Richard III, Henry ( Read more... )

And passages like that are why I love yr LJ.

Heh, thanks! :D

Agree wholeheartedly about radio drama -- I've taken an interest in it since starting up DSP. One thing I will say for us is that we've never had much of a problem with similar voices, really... ;)

John Wood, who plays John of Gaunt, played Edward IV in the Loncraine-McKellen Richard III, which means that during his scenes I was picturing him toting an oxygen tank and attempting to grope nurses. From what I know of the historical Gaunt, this is not wholly out of character.

Like I said before... This occasions me to the notion of DSP's Gaunt doing the same thing which is just a deeply disturbing place.

That is all. ;)

Any resemblance to any other actors of the role of Gaunt, living or dead, is strictly coincidental and probably occurring in the mind of the reader. ;)

I think you're thinking of DSP's York, there, for the nurse thing.... ;)

*ducks*

Although if it were an attractive male nurse, that resembled Bolingbroke, say, DSP's Gaunt could be persauded. ;)

Okay, Gaunt so does not have a reverse Oedipus complex, and I'm going to go and boil my brain now.

Oh, I saw that -- with the gratuitous Donne? SO MUCH LOVE for that poem.

Incidentally, I've thought for a while that an audiobook of the poems of Donne read by Sam West really, really needs to exist. Although it would probably lead to a castastrophic rise in spontaneous combustions.

I'll think about the topic, and maybe jump in tomorrow; I'm not sure I'm up to thinking theoretically just this moment. It's a really cool topic though.

Fortunately, the Arkangel recordings aren't too hard to find! ;) There are sound samples and stuff here (including, in fact, a pretty lengthy section of Richard II's soliloquy)...

i haven't read Diarmaid MacCullough's history of the Reformation, but you should absolutely buy it, because he is a fellow of my college, the academic supervisor of two friends of mine, and an incredibly funny guy.

(the world just keeps getting smaller ...)

seriously, it's true that i haven't read it but it should be a good read, if he writes anything like his personality. we were talking just the other night about what an adventure he's been having getting the thing translated into german, how the german publisher is insisting the book be split into two volumes, deciding where to split it, and so on and so forth. also how the original title had a subtitle, "Europe's House Divided", which the american publishers removed because it would sell better in the US without the word "europe" in it. various things like that.
