Poor boys, i would want revenge too! In my reading about Kyd and Marlowe I am amazed how beating was just assumed to be part of school

There were even beatings at Cambridge!

Still, i think boys got loose and had fun too. Maybe it was easier to accept because it happened to everyone?

IIRC, beatings weren't officially banned at Eton until the 1980s! But yeah, certainly in the medieval/early modern period corporal punishment was assumed to be a routine part of education.

OTOH early modern college sounds really fun, in a hardass sort of way, so yeah.
