I definitely would not give Trader Joe's cards.

I give random amounts each year. I don't know what is customary. This year it is $40.

Oh, and one year I forgot to give presents so we sent amazon cards through email. Not ideal but better than nothing for sure.

Tomorrow is the last day of school.
$40 seems too much; not that I know what's the "usual". We used to collect $10/family or at most $15/family per class. Giving $40 to each teacher seems like a lot.

What's wrong with Trader joe's cards? our friends give starbucks cards -- is that better? I can do starbucks -- it's right next to trader joe's :)

Does your family like the latkes with finely or coarsely grated potatoes? In my family, the adults love the coarsest grate, but the kids love it with the finer one, which happens to also be easier to make anyway. Peel a large potato, throw it into food processor. Add an egg or two (I do approx. 1 egg per medium size potato), salt, pepper. Turn on the food processor. Add 2 topped tablespoons of flour (white flour works best; if you do buckwheat you have to let it sit a while; if you do bean flower it won't be as puffy). Fry in oil. You are done! (this will give you very homogeneous latkes, almost like pancakes, which kids tend to like)

For apple sauce, I just throw an apple with a bit of orange juice into the blender.

My family doesn't get a choice. I'll be using our Salad Shooter to grate the potatoes, which ends up being somewhat coarse -- pretty much like grating on a large grater. Does your recipe still work with that?

Yes. It's just that if you are using coarser grate, you may need to fry them for a little longer. Since I don't like adding too much oil (even if it's Hanukkah!), I sometimes let them sit in an oven for a bit after frying to make sure it fully cooked through.

I usually give teachers little sweet treats, from TJs or Whole Foods. It's about $15-18, just wrap it in a paper or put in a gift bag with little note. This year I'll do the same thing for music/gymnastics teachers. My budget for teachers' presents is approx. $20 maximum, otherwise it's getting too expensive with number of teachers kids (three of them) have :).

yep, same thinking here. Two school teachers per kid (at least -- probably should include others also) and gymnastics and other teachers.

У нас в CVS продают gift cards на кучу разных мест, на любые суммы.
И еще, в моих не-подарочных покупках с Амазон, в коробке среди бумаги и бумажек обнаружились "заряжаемые" Амазоновские карточки, цветные. Я вот так же в последний день спохватилась, и подарила такую карточку. Вроде нормально получилось.

У нас тут подарочные карточки продаются практически в каждом продуктовом магазине, и в аптеках, и в крафтовых магазинах типа Michael's. Есть у тебя что-то такое по дороге? Только не повторяй моей ошибки, я покупала карточки на Амазон, но у меня рука дрогнула, и я купила на 100 долларов карточек на Google Play! Ужас :( Продаю их теперь на крейгс листе и ибее с убытком. А проблема подарка учителям так и осталась не решена, т.к. Амазоновских карточек я так и не купила. Боюсь теперь :( Шутка. Надо будет сегодня заехать. Я куплю обоим учителям по $15 на Амазон. Одна просила карточку туда, где она сможет купить книги для класса. Другая вообще просила ничего ней не дарить, а принести игрушку для бедных, они тут собирали. Я бы не дарила Trader Joe's. Мне кажется, что если есть возможность Амазон, то лучше он. Если нет, тогда уж лучше Старбакс, Таргет, или Barnes and Noble (только потому, что это учителя
