Great choice! It really is a great movie. I find it so difficult to answer this question, though. movies that make my short list:
- Bladerunner - The Matrix (the first one, haven't seen the other two yet) - Minority Report - 12 monkeys (I love time travel stuff) - Equilibrium - Gattaca (I know, this gets a lot of crap, but i loved it, and actually we had a huge discussion about it at work the other day and it stirred up a lot of emotions)
... and of course the Terminator and the Star Wars series (original 3) are AWESOME but just don't rival the ones above in terms of making your brain work. Just in terms of Awesomeness.
I once wrote a 20-page paper on the film as part of a "film analysis" class in uni. So I watched the film two or three times for that and have loved it ever since. Like you said, it is definitely multi-layered.
Though I'd have to say, as best scifi film of all time, I'd still pick one of the original Star Wars films. Probably "The Empire Strikes Back". :D
Ahhh but now I saw your other friend deana_in_texas's reply and it made me realise: I forgot THE MATRIX! ;)
As far as making you think and looking at multiple layers etc., this film is the best. Plus, the effects were revolutionary (and the technologies developed at the time of the making of this film are still influential today).
