The ocean had never sounded so soothing. Listening to the waves hit up against the piers of the city was something that usually put John to sleep in no time, but tonight he was just far too wound up.

Of course, piloting a Wraith dart with your friends beamed into its storage unit and then getting two Hive ships to turn and wipe each other out wasn't exactly conducive to a relaxing evening at home.

It also didn't help that he couldn't stop thinking about Ford. Earlier in the infirmary, he'd been certain that the younger man had made it off the Hive ship before its destruction, but now he wasn't so sure. How could he have? The Daedalus hadn't even been able to record the survival of his dart as it made its way down to the planet. There hadn't been enough left for them to even check for survivors.

John stared out his window overlooking the city, his arms folded over his bare chest. He could still recall his last encounter with Ford as clear as day. He'd run off to get Teyla and Ronon, absolutely positive that Ford had his back and that they were all going to get out of there. Ford didn't reappear again after that. For all he intellectually knew, the young Lieutenant had gone up with the Hive ships. Was it his instincts telling him that Ford had made it out and that they'd run across him again someday, or was it just wishful thinking.

Two soft hands brushed against his back, slowly making their way around his torso, firm arms wrapping around his body. The soft curves of a familiar body pressed against him gently.

"You should get some rest," Elizabeth whispered, her cheek resting against his shoulder.

He closed his eyes, not moving accept to stroke his hand along one of her arms. He'd stayed up late, writing up his report of his team's latest mishap while also receiving Major Lorne's report of all that had gone on in Atlantis while he'd been off-world. From all that he'd heard, the Major had acquitted himself well in his place. Not to mention, he'd worked well with Elizabeth during the crisis.

He hadn't been able to return to his quarters until late, much later than Carson would be happy with, had he known. When he arrived, however, John found his lover already in bed waiting for him. That is, she'd fallen asleep waiting for him, covered only by a thin sheet as a warm breeze swept through the room. He stopped only to take a quick shower before slipping into the bed with her, pulling her sleeping form close and molding his body to her own. Still, the weariness he'd felt then had vanished, leaving him feeling like he'd drunk a half-dozen cups of coffee.

"Can't sleep," he answered simply.

She didn't answer at first, just rested against him while he leaned back against her. This was what he'd missed the most while he'd been on Ford's planet and on this last hair-brained mission. Just resting quietly with her close by, feeling her touching him in some way, in any way.

"Ford?" At his silent nod, Elizabeth continued, "If he made it off the ship, he'll find a way to let us know. We'll see him again, John. Maybe we'll even get him to come home."

He couldn't help but be slightly surprised by her words. There had been so many times that he'd wondered if she'd shared his hope in recovering Ford. She'd always uttered the appropriate sentiments whenever he was brought up, but he still wondered all the same. Now she was all but repeating what he'd said earlier in the infirmary, and she was saying them with more certainty than he felt at the moment.

"Yeah, I hope so," he said quietly. John then turned around to face her. She looked up at him with sleepy green eyes and a smile. Her gentle appearance was breathtaking unto itself, but the fact that it only hid the fierce strength he knew was there made her all the more alluring. Slowly, he leaned in and kissed her, slowly brushing his tongue along her lips, seeking access to her mouth.

She granted it almost immediately, her tongue coming up to dance with his own. Her arms left his waist, sliding up his arms to wrap around his neck. That brought her body, clothed only in the sheet from the bed, flush against his. He hummed in the back of his throat, signaling his delight.

After several moments, or maybe even minutes, their lips parted. His forehead coming to rest against hers, he stared down into her eyes. Elizabeth gazed back up at him, one of her hands coming to rest on his cheek.

Stroking him softly, she whispered, her tone oh so inviting, "Come to bed."

Oh yeah, he was wide awake now. Not much chance in getting some sleep any time soon. Smiling faintly, John let Elizabeth lead him across the room to the bed.

It was good to be home.
