Summary: The scene in Café Diem had hardly been an unexpected one.
Note: No, the title has nothing to do with the Kelly Clarkson song. ;)
More often than not, Jack went to bed at night completely exhausted. Being the sheriff in a town full of geniuses who barely knew the meaning of the word caution usually left him cleaning up their messes. Today was no exception. An intelligent, adaptable drone that developed a sense of hero-worship for his daughter along with a new boss for Global Dynamics had left him pretty well beat.
“Good night, Sheriff Carter,” S.A.R.A.H. said cheerfully. “Sleep well.”
“G’night, S.A.R.A.H.,” Jack mumbled as he leaned back on his bed. His eyes drooped and he wanted nothing more than to just fall into the land of the unconscious. Something held him back.
The scene in Café Diem had hardly been an unexpected one, he admitted that well enough. Allison’s blushing and hedging at GD after the “dressing down” with Eva Thorne had been telling enough on its own. Still, when Zoë had solemnly pointed out that he was more than just late picking her up, it had felt worse than all of the times Jo put him down for the count combined. Watching Stark and Allison all but make out in public was not on his list of things to see. Ever.
Zoë had been right. He was too late, but the more he thought about it, Jack began to believe he had been too late the moment he had watched Allison convince Stark to stay in Eureka so many months ago, just after the accident that had killed Kim Anderson. His memories of those tumultuous days were hazy at best for some reason, but he still clearly remembers knowing that the chance for anything to happen between him and Allison was rapidly spinning away every time he reached for it.
It hurt to lose someone you loved, Jack thought drowsily. Especially when they had grown as close as they had. Something had changed, something had taken their chance from them, and it wasn’t entirely because Stark had stayed.
Jack was pretty sure that he was close to figuring something out, but his thoughts blurred together at that point, and he drifted off to sleep. That something slipped out of his grasp. Again.
“… no time that we don’t end up together! You just have to have a little faith.”
