As to rights of passage you could go one of two ways. Getting a driver's license is still a pretty big deal, although often it happens later, like at 18 because of how hard city driving is and how unnecessary. Often kids wait until just before college.
Another option is a bit less on the up and up. Your first fake ID. That's of course more of a right of passage among teens and not teens and their families. Age wise it does fall more in the 16 range through and might be more what you're looking for.
I too am bummed that you are not going to have your usual time to write, for purely selfish reasons on my part. ;)
