The best part about hands definitely is always having them around for reference. Since your hands have deformed not-entirely-average proportions like mine, do you usually keep that in mind when drawing random hands?
I almost never use refs when drawing random hands, because I'm too lazy cool for refs. ...But when I do use my hands as refs it's generally to look at how fingers will be positioned and the like, I don't really ref them for proportions. It's kind of intuitive.
