Yesterday in German class we were discussing how Americans view America and how Germans view Germany, and we were talking about whether we are proud to be Americans. And one guy said he was definitely not proud to be an American because he doesn't like the government. But there's so much more to it than that, you know? You can't dismiss the things you're proud of based on disliking one thing. You can't say that you dislike the whole and then, based on that, rationalize why the specific things that you may actually like are bad. It kind of makes me sad to hear that people aren't proud to be American because... that's who we are, so why shouldn't we be proud? It makes me sad, too, to hear people being proud to be American without even acknowledging anything that makes them ashamed to be American. You can be both. So Caitlin, you can defend the dignity of elements of your country without sounding hyper-patriotic. It's cool.
