A POEM A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY

Well, it might. Poetry is good for the soul.

Yes, it's my favorite month of the year again - April - National Poetry Month.

There are many ways to celebrate:

READING - read your favorite poems, try a new collection, or read the same poem every day for a month and see what nuances you discover after 30 readings.

WRITING - write a new poem a day or work on the same poem every day.

CRAFTING - develop your poetry skills by experimenting with new forms or through a poetry craft book. The Ode Less Travelled by Stephen Fry is my favorite. It's not too technical and includes fun exercises.

PEFORMING - find an open mic night and share your poetry with others. Or read poetry to your children or husband or even just out loud to yourself.

SUPPORTING - encourage and inspire published poets by sharing or purchasing their work. Donate a copy of your favorite poetry book to the library.

Today I mailed off copies of Kelly Ramsdell Fineman's The Universe Comes Knocking to my mother in England and my friend in Australia. That's how I'm kicking off my celebration of National Poetry Month. How about you?
